Owru Yari, also known as “Old Year,” is a festive celebration in Suriname that takes place on December 31st. It marks the end of the current year and the welcoming of the new one with vibrant parades, traditional music, and dance performances. People from diverse cultural backgrounds come together to showcase their heritage.

Owru Yari fosters unity, reflection, and gratitude among communities as they look back on the past and embrace the future with optimism and hope, culminating in a midnight fireworks display symbolizing new beginnings.

A highlight of Owru Yari Fest is the “Pagara Estafette,” where a long string of firecrackers is lit, producing an exhilarating display of noise and light, believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck for the year ahead.
